The role of leadership courses

How many times have you gone to a course which lacked relevance and practical use? How many folders are on your shelf remaining unopened and unapplied?

Leadership courses or programmes need to result in real learning that sticks.

The most effective way to learn and develop a new skill or behaviour is to apply it and practice it on the-the-job and in real-life situations.

The 70/20/10 Formula

The 70/20/10 formula says that:

  • 70% of learning and development takes place from real-life and on-the-job experiences, projects, and problem solving. This is the most important aspect of any leadership development plan.
  • 20% comes from feedback and from observing and working with role models.
  • 10% of learning and development comes from formal training courses.

Successful leadership courses and programmes bear this formula in mind.

The Formula in Action: Catapult Leadership Programme

  • Line managers are included as coaches before and after The Catapult Leadership Programme/programme.
  • At the end of every session of our leadership course participants identify insights and actions transferable to their workplace.
  • Our leadership training courses incorporate feedback from line managers and programme peers.
  • Participants create a 'breakthrough project' during The Catapult Leadership Programme – a challenging project to make a real difference back at work
