Delegation skills

It could be said that delegation skills are management skills. So why have it in a leadership programme? We include delegation skills for two reasons. First, many people say they would love to lead if they had more time. So being an effective delegator frees up time that can be applied to leading. For example, having time to step back from the day to day operations to thinking strategically about where the team or organisation should be heading.

Second, leaders are interested in growing people around them. Delegating tasks and projects is a key way of coaching and growing people.

Catapult Leadership provides participants with a simple delegation skills toolbox. The toolbox helps identify tasks that can be delegated, who the task can be delegated to, and (depending on the person chosen), how the delegation should be managed in a way that supports and grows that person.

The toolbox shows how to set up a delegation effectively and how to monitor its progress. Finally it shows how to de-brief the completed task in a way that maximises learning.
